ISTANBUL BAZAARS
SPICE BAZAAR -MISIR CARSISI
The Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) in Istanbul is a vibrant market known for its rich aroma and colorful displays of spices, herbs, and sweets. Located in the Eminönü district, it was built in 1664 during the reign of Sultan Mehmed IV as part of the New Mosque complex. The market is a haven for saffron, cumin, thyme, and sumac, as well as traditional Turkish delights like lokum and baklava. Its narrow alleys are filled with the scent of spices, dried fruits, teas, and perfumes, making it a sensory experience for visitors.
History
Historically, the Spice Bazaar served as a trading hub for exotic goods coming from Egypt and other regions, reflecting Istanbul’s position as a crossroads between Europe and Asia. The name “Spice Bazaar” comes from the fact that it was once used to distribute goods from the Ottoman Empire's far-reaching territories. Over the years, it has remained a bustling marketplace for both locals and tourists. Visitors can spend 1-2 hours wandering through the stalls, learning about Turkish culinary traditions and sampling a variety of authentic, flavorful products.
